Color grading for travel content: how we create our cinematic look

Color grading is what separates a travel video from a cinematic travel film. It sets the mood, builds consistency across shots, and gives your work a recognizable visual identity.

We grade everything in DaVinci Resolve. It offers the most control and handles LOG footage from our Sony cameras better than any other tool. The free version covers 90% of what most creators need.

Our process starts with a base correction. We normalize exposure, white balance, and contrast across all clips first. This creates a clean starting point before any creative decisions.

From there, we apply our signature look. For travel content, we lean toward warm highlights, slightly desaturated shadows, and a controlled teal-orange split. The goal is natural but elevated. Not a heavy filter.

Consistency matters more than style. Matching shots from different times of day, different cameras, and different locations is the real skill. We use reference stills from each project to keep everything aligned.

The best advice for beginners: start with the correction before the creative grade. Get the technical right first, then build the mood on top of a clean foundation.
